Overview of Kwai Tsing Community
- Kwai Tsing contains most of the heavy industries, e.g. container terminals, oil tanks, chemical and cement industry, ship repair and construction. More than 1/3 injuries (A&E PMH 2000) were work related.
- Kwai Tsing is a densely populated area in Hong Kong with 0.5 million population in 1991 hectares. More than 70 % of population live in public housing estates with crowded living environment. 15,441 domestic injuries happened in 2000 that ranked second after industrial injuries. 66% domestic injuries occurred at age 5 or below.
- Kwai Tsing is one of the most busy transportation point in Hong Kong with 7 bridges linking the Tsing Yi Island by highways to the city, container terminals, airport, Lantau Island and New Teritories. In Year 2000, there were 3481 road accidents that constitute 23.36 % in Hong Kong . 18.56% of road accidents were with casualties in which goods vehicles constituted 51%.
Kwai Tsing Safe Community
Safety is a fundamental human right (WHO 1989) that deserves universal concern and concerted effort to promote. ˇ§Safe Communityˇ¨ is the promotion of safety awareness at local level. With support of Occupational Health and Safety Council (The 6 th Collaborating Centre of Safe Community, World Health Organization), Kwai Tsing Safe Community was inaugurated in October 2000 with the joint effort of the Kwai Tsing District Council and more than 10 local public and private organizations. Community partners were united to declare a commitment to comprehensive and ongoing programs for safety promotion. This project aims at promoting a safety culture, building a healthy and safe working and living environment in Kwai Tsing. |
